The Twisted Forest of Walcheren
De Manteling is one of the most special coastal forests in the Netherlands. Nowhere else do centuries-old deciduous trees grow so close to the dunes and the North Sea. The constant battle with the salty sea wind has shaped a unique landscape here.
Directly behind the dunes stand the famous Zeeland 'bonsai trees': English oaks that, due to the wind and shifting sand, have hardly grown taller than a meter. Yet, some specimens are over 200 years old.
