On the edge of Yerseke lie the Oesterputten (Oyster Pits): a unique piece of Zeeland where oysters have been 'ripened' in open basins since the 19th century. Seawater flows through them slowly, giving the oysters their characteristic salty taste.
You walk here along the heart of Zeeland's oyster culture. The basins, wooden sluices, and weathered edges tell the story of generations of fishermen and growers. Depending on the time, you can see how oysters are sorted or prepared for transport.
