The Church of the Presentation of Mary into the Temple is considered an architectural masterpiece and was built in 1894 according to plans by the German architect Ernst Ziller. It stands on the site of an ancient Hera shrine and is often referred to as the city's first holy church.
It is built in the shape of a cross with a central dome and combines Neo-Romanesque and Byzantine stylistic elements.
The elaborate decorations at the base of the dome and the cornice are particularly noteworthy. During the Ottoman occupation, it served as the seat of the city's metropolitan.
