Tarquinia's Via degli Archi is one of those places where, as soon as you begin walking, you feel like you've traveled through the centuries. The route, originally medieval but built on a much older history, winds between masonry arches that alternate between shadows and sudden bursts of light, creating an almost theatrical atmosphere.
Along the road, you'll also encounter several medieval towers, dating primarily between the 12th and 14th centuries, when Tarquinia was a free commune. They were built by the city's great families, both to defend their homes and, perhaps above all, to display their power and prestige.
