The Västra Vägen (West Road) leads out of Sundsvall's city center across the Widesbron, a bridge forty meters long and thirteen meters wide spanning the Selångersån river. In the 18th century, the western city gate was also located at this bridge. Today, it is a modern concrete girder bridge. Next to the bridge is a monument commemorating the Battle of Selånger in 1721, when Swedish troops attempted to defend Sundsvall against attacking Russian forces at the site of the present-day bridge during the final stages of the Great Northern War.
