In 1897, the public library in Greifswald was opened by a non-profit association. Since 1989, the Hans Fallada City Library has been located in the three historic burgher houses in Knopfstraße, in direct proximity to the market square. In 1993, on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the writer Hans Fallada, who was born in Greifswald in 1893, it was named Stadtbibliothek Hans Fallada.
