While often a warm up on the way to its parent peak, Scafell Pike, hikes up Lingmell are absolutely worthy of your full attention as this fell is a wonder in its own right. Lying just to the north west of England’s highest mountain, Lingmell offers a strenuous but straightforward ascent from the west with a fantastic surprise at the top. Equally, it can be ascended after Scafell, ideal for a final summit and a glance backwards.

For families who don’t want to commit to the Pike, Lingmell is a brilliant hike to get up close and personal. Equally, hikes can be adjusted almost endlessly, to suit the weather and your energy levels. Continue up to Scafell, over to Broad Crag or return via the corridor.

A perfect viewing platform for the highest peak in the country

You can head up Lingmell from a variety of directions, the most straightforward being from Wasdale Head where you can find parking and toilet facilities. This route ascends quickly over grassy, steep terrain and within a short distance you’ll already be able to pause for wonderful views of the valley below and glistening Wastwater.

As you near the top, Lingmell’s body becomes more rock than grass and you’ll find the summit to be an incredibly rocky affair. Impressive summit cairns mark the spot where the fell reaches 2,648 feet (807 m) and, making your way to the eastern crags, you’ll find the fell drops away hundreds of feet to Piers Gill below. A deep gorge, Piers Gill should only be viewed from afar as it’s unsafe for walkers.

Look north to Great Gable’s tremendous form, one of the most jaw-dropping views in the national park. Of course, Scafell Pike rises immediately south east and will likely lure you onwards, up its rugged slopes.

You can hike the fell throughout the year, but only ascend in winter conditions with the right experience and equipment. As always, the weather can change quickly.

    Hiking

Lingmell may be one of Scafell Pike's satellite peaks, but it is a fine mountain in its own right. Its rocky north east face quickens the pulse of hikers ascending into the Scafells along the Sty Head Pass, while the cleft of Piers Gill is a spectacular sight beneath its crags. However, arguably the best thing about Lingmell is the astonishing view of Great Gable from its summit.

    Hiking

A fantastic climb up here really straight forward to the summit from the Corridor route, much quieter than Scafell, stop here and have lunch before making the climb to the top of Englands highest mountain.
