Bad Windsheim has a picturesque old town with many narrow streets offering plenty to explore. Around the market square, one highlight follows another. For example, the town church of St. Kilian, first mentioned in documents in 1289. A little further out, but incredibly worth a visit, is the Franconian Open-Air Museum, where over 100 largely authentically restored houses take you through 700 years of Franconian history.

The first documented mention of the town on the Aisch River probably dates back to 741.

In 1248, the market town of Windsheim was elevated to an imperial city by Emperor Frederick II.

As an imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation for centuries until 1806, Windsheim enjoyed enormous importance and influence from the Middle Ages until the 19th century.
