Two different towers shape the image of the Gothic hall church of St. Johannis, built between 1300 and 1344, with its north portal. The north tower housed the city's tower guards until modern times, and later the highest student apartment in Germany was located here. Today the tower room is used as a prayer room by the parish of St. Johannis. Every Saturday at 12 noon there is the possibility of climbing the tower to enjoy the wonderful view over the old town and the surrounding area.

St. John's Church is a striking example of its two towers. This 14th-century Gothic market and council church is located directly behind the Old Town Hall. Every Saturday from 11 a.m., a flugelhorn sounds from its towers. Until 2001, the tower keeper's apartment housed Germany's highest student apartment, but after extensive renovations to the tower, it could not be rented out again. Today, the space serves as a chapel.
