This is one of the oldest evidences of Christianity in the Gorto Valley. The church was built in the 13th century on the site of an even older religious building. Archaeologists have discovered traces of earlier foundations here, indicating that this place has been an important place of worship for centuries.

The church is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours – a Roman legionnaire who shared his cloak with a beggar and later became a bishop. His cult developed particularly in Central and Northern Europe, but also took deep root in the Alps, where Martin was venerated as a patron of travelers, shepherds, and the poor. Travelers, and therefore also cyclists 😁.
