If you're after a hike that delivers big on views and wildflowers without an all-day commitment, the Memaloose Lookout – View from Chatfield Hill loop is a fantastic choice. This 3.5-mile (5.6 km) route starts in moderate oak forests before transitioning to open slopes bursting with wildflowers, especially in spring. The highlight is the panoramic vista from Chatfield Hill, where you can spot Memaloose Island, Mount Hood, and Mount Adams, making the 487 feet (148 metres) of elevation gain feel incredibly rewarding.
Planning your visit is straightforward, though the trailhead across old Highway 30 from Memaloose Overlook parking can be a bit subtle to find. The trail is rated moderate and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, but be ready for a short, steep push up Chatfield Hill. Spring is the absolute best time to go for the wildflowers, but it's accessible year-round. Keep an eye out for poison oak and rattlesnakes, particularly during the warmer months.
What makes this trail truly special is its spectacular wildflower display, often considered on par with more famous regional hikes like Dog Mountain but typically less crowded. The historic Memaloose Island, visible from the overlook, adds a layer of cultural significance as a former Native American burial ground. It’s a great option for a relatively quick hike that offers continuous, stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge.
