The Brasstown Bald via Jacks Knob Trail offers a challenging ascent through diverse terrain to Georgia's highest point. You'll traverse a dirt path with roots and rocks, winding through lush rhododendron forests that burst with color in spring. As you climb, especially after crossing GA 180 at Jack's Gap, the views open up, culminating in breathtaking 360-degree panoramas from the Brasstown Bald summit.
This moderate 4.0-mile (6.5 km) hike involves a substantial 1971 feet (601 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 2 hours and 25 minutes. The trail starts from the Brasstown Bald parking lot. Be aware that the trail can have ice crystals in colder months, so check conditions before you go. It's a rewarding option for those who prefer to earn their summit views.
Designated as a National Recreation Trail, this route has historical significance, originally built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. It connects to the Appalachian Trail at Chattahoochee Gap and offers a unique perspective on the Brasstown Wilderness, home to diverse plant and animal species. Hiking it means you're following a path that divides Union and Towns County, Georgia, offering a true sense of place.
