Hiking
The wall could contain embrasures for small arms. The purpose of the Carnot wall was to make it difficult for an enemy to cross the ditch. It was first used by the French military engineer General Lazare Nicolas Carnot in his 1772 drawing.
Some bricks clearly bear the names of the brickworks where they were made.
