Mount Errigal

Hiking

4.9

(46)

When you see Errigal from a distance, it would take a snowstorm to stop you from immediately wanting to hike it. This tremendous mountain in Ireland’s County Donegal is akin to child’s drawing, a fantastic conical peak that’s oft-cited as the country’s ‘most photographed’ mountain.

The largest of the Derryveagh Mountain range’s Seven Sisters, Errigal reaches 2,464 feet (751 m), towering over the Altan and Dunlewy Lough below. The main trail is straightforward with a clear path for much of the way. It’s a strenuous climb, with some loose rock and scree, so some hiking experience and good fitness is required.

A phenomenal mountain summit with unrivalled coastline views

As stunning as Errigal is to look at from a distance, the mountain rewards you even more with extraordinary views from its summit ridge. There are actually twin-summits, joined by a narrow path and it’s well worth hiking to both if you’re happy to do so and the weather is conducive.

A popular starting point is the car park on the R125 road to the south east of the peak. When you reach the summit, clear weather will reveal County Donegal’s extraordinary landscapes. A vast number of large and small loughs pepper the ground below, similar to Northwest Scotland’s knock and lochan scapes. To the north west, the Atlantic Ocean fills the horizon.

In every other direction, the Derryveagh Mountains rise out of the desolate land and any complaining thighs on the way up are long forgotten. It’s simply spectacular. It’s important to remember though, that Errigal is extremely exposed and partial to a quick weather change. Always keep an eye on the sky when you’re hiking and be prepared to turn around if poor conditions close in.

    Hiking

The way from the parking lot on the R251 to the Errigal is very boggy. Steep ascent over gravel. However, the effort is rewarded with a magnificent view!
