The "Candy Cane Mountains" is the popular name for a striking, striped area of exposed shale rock in the Khizi and Siyazan districts of Azerbaijan, near Baku. The area gets its name from the red-pink and white swirling patterns formed by iron-rich and chalky shale layers. These colors are caused by the oxidation of iron compounds within the rock, altered by groundwater
