The Schilfbruch is a nature reserve covering approximately 274 hectares between Hänigsen and Uetze. It is one of the largest alder swamp forests in Lower Saxony and includes wetland and riparian forests, oak and beech woodlands, and near-natural ponds and pools.
The Thöse River flows through the area, and a system of ditch dams regulates the water balance. Directly adjacent are Lake Irenensee and the Spreewald lakes, which serve as local recreation areas.
Challenge: Drought and falling groundwater levels threaten the habitat – protective measures are intended to stabilize the water balance.
