A broad giant of the Yorkshire Dales, Great Shunner fell is a noble Pennine summit with all the charm and character associated with high, untamed land. Hikes to Great Shunner Fell take you to the highest point in Wensleydale, an unparalleled viewpoint for surveying the sheer, vast majesty of the surrounding fells.

Its large mass and gradual gradients mean that to truly get to know Great Shunner Fell you have to get up amongst it. From the valleys at its base, it hides its true character and size behind gentle, green flanks. The hillwalking is a pleasure and there’s so much to explore.

A vast fell promising gentle gradients, huge views and a wild character

As the raised meeting point of five broad ridges, there are many walking routes to Great Shunner Fell. Some follow old miner’s tracks whilst others follow the famous Pennine Way, which passes over the summit.

Once on the summit, you’ll find the obligatory trig point and a stone cross shelter providing respite from the elements. This is a place for gazing out across the high places, as views of the valleys below are hidden by the hill’s own wide shoulders.

Upland is seen on every point of the compass. The Cross Fell ridge rises to the north above the Eden Valley; in the east the gentle undulations of the Dales stretch onward; in the south are the familiar shapes of the Yorkshire Three Peaks above Ribblesdale and in the west rise the tightly knit, green humps of the Howgill Fells.

The market town of Hawes makes an excellent base for approaches from the south, with various inns and amenities. Meanwhile, in the north, the village of Thwaite boasts cottages and a hotel, whilst camping can be sought in surrounding Swaledale.

    Hiking

Legendary fellwalker Alfred Wainwright said he could climb Great Shunner “nonstop despite being senile and getting as fat as a pig”. When hiking here, you'll understand the sentiment. It feels like walking along the backbone of England.

    Hiking

Great Shunner Fell is a good little workout coming up from Thwaite, about 5.5 kilometres one way, so quite a bit shorter than coming up from Hawes. I wish I could say the views are great, but the cloud was in today on my hike. It was a great day out though, and I met some great people on the hill from all over the world.
