The Route of the Hiawatha Trail – 1.5-Mile Tunnel loop from Roland Summit offers a truly immersive cycling experience through the stunning Bitterroot Mountains. You'll traverse compact dirt and gravel paths, plunge into the darkness of the 1.66-mile St. Paul Pass Tunnel, and emerge to the sight of a beautiful waterfall. The route also features several impressive sky-high trestles, providing panoramic views that showcase the region's dramatic natural beauty and engineering marvels.
This isn't a casual ride; it's a difficult 19.4-mile (31.2 km) touring bicycle loop with a significant 2055 feet (626 metres) of elevation gain, typically completed in about 3 hours and 4 minutes. The trail is usually open from May to September, and you'll need a helmet and strong lights for the dark tunnels. Be aware that the St. Paul Pass Tunnel can be quite cold, even in summer, so a jacket is a good idea.
Known as the "Crown Jewel" of rail-to-trail adventures, the Route of the Hiawatha has earned a spot in the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame. This specific loop from Roland Summit provides a more challenging perspective on the famous trail, allowing you to experience its unique blend of historical significance and natural splendor, including its 10 tunnels and 7 trestles, in a demanding yet rewarding way.
