Escape into the serene redwood groves of The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park on the Aptos Rancho and Terrace Trail Loop. This easy 2.6-mile (4.2 km) hike takes you alongside Aptos Creek, where you'll find yourself surrounded by towering redwoods and lush creekside vegetation. The path offers a delightful journey through a "crazy forest" with twisted trees and features a picturesque wooden bridge over the creek, providing a tranquil nature experience.
This loop is a great option for a relatively quick outing, taking about 1 hour and 12 minutes to complete with a gentle 355 feet (108 metres) of elevation gain. There is typically a day-use fee for vehicle entry into the park, and parking can get busy on weekends, so an early start is recommended. Be prepared for potentially muddy sections and creek crossings after heavy rains; late spring through fall generally offers drier conditions.
Beyond its natural beauty, the area holds historical significance as part of the Aptos Ranch, a Mexican land grant from 1833. The trail also connects to a wider network within the park, offering opportunities for extended exploration if you're looking to spend more time among the redwoods. Keep an eye out for "The Advocate," the park's largest redwood, which can be reached via connecting trails.
