The High Bridge Trail – High Bridge Station loop from Rice offers a delightful touring cycling experience on a smooth, crushed limestone path. As you ride, you'll traverse through peaceful woodlands and open rural farmland, leading to the magnificent High Bridge itself, which provides expansive views 125 feet above the Appomattox River. This moderate 16.4-mile (26.5 km) route, with a gentle 537 feet (164 metres) of elevation gain, is a comfortable ride for most, taking about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Starting from the Rice trailhead, you'll find convenient parking. The High Bridge Station (Camp Paradise) area, close to the bridge, also features a large parking lot, restrooms, and a visitor center. Remember to bring your own water, as it's not readily available on the trail, and consider renting a bike in Farmville or Rice if you don't have your own.
This trail is a converted rail bed, offering a consistently wide and gently graded path that's rich in history. The High Bridge played a crucial role in the Civil War, and historical markers along the route provide fascinating insights into its past. It's an impressive feat of engineering and a major draw, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.
