The Thekenberge mountains south of Halberstadt are a true natural jewel in the Harz foothills. The ascent to the "Gläserner Mönch" (Glass Monk) viewpoint is particularly worthwhile, a striking sandstone formation with a magnificent panoramic view over the forests of the Thekenberge, reaching as far as the Harz mountains and, with good visibility, even to the Brocken. The area also delights with mystical rock formations, ancient legends, and varied hiking trails.
