This is a well-maintained asphalt trail through young hardwood woodlands well away from the city but close enough to a highway to here a faint sound of traffic

Embark on a moderate touring bicycle adventure along the Chippewa River State Trail, a 44.6 miles (71.7 km) route that offers a gentle ride with only 500 feet (152 metres) of elevation gain. You can expect to complete this journey in about 4 hours and 10 minutes. As you pedal, you will follow the scenic Chippewa River, crossing a notable 500-foot-long trestle that provides expansive views of the waterway, and pass through tranquil forests, shaded bluffs, and open farmlands.

Before you head out, remember that a state trail pass is necessary for all bicyclists aged 16 and older when riding on the state-managed sections of the trail. You will find convenient parking and essential amenities at several trailheads, including those located in Eau Claire's Phoenix Park, Caryville, Meridean, and Durand, making it easy to start your ride. Plan your visit to ensure you have the required pass.

This trail follows a former rail corridor, which contributes to its generally flat and accessible terrain, perfect for a relaxed touring experience. The route showcases diverse natural landscapes, from river bottoms and prairies to wetlands, particularly as it winds through the Lower Chippewa State Natural Area. Keep an eye out for blooming sunflowers in late summer, adding a vibrant touch to the agricultural sections of your ride.
