The St. George branch church in Steinkirchen, idyllically situated on an island in the Würm in the Steinkirchen district, was first mentioned in documents in 1315.
The floor plan of the original Romanesque predecessor, which probably collapsed in 1745, is still recognizable. Reconstruction began in 1748 and a richly decorated baroque interior was created.
The high altar, a work by Johann Baptist Straub, is remarkable. However, his famous student Ignaz Günther may have already created the two angel figures. In the center of the high altar there is an impressive Gothic Mother of God in a halo.
