The Wormser Elle is an important relic from the Middle Ages. Here, in the immediate vicinity of the market, the two iron clamps were used to define the unit of measurement that was binding for trade in Worms: the "Worms Elle". The distance between the two iron brackets is exactly 54.9 cm, as the information board reveals. In order to avoid disputes, everyone could take exact measurements here.

The Worms ell at Worms Cathedral is certainly not easy to find, because you have to stand in the right place and look up. How nice that a sign has now been put up. Background: In the past, people bought fabrics and similar things "per ell", and people with a rather short ell were often measured. This is why this unit of measurement became mandatory for trade in the imperial city of Worms.
