The hollow paths start already below the gate via Porta di Sovana.
Above the paths you have to follow the little traffic road for about 1 km, but you will be rewarded with a view of the city.
The paths can become smooth after rainy weather.

The village of Pitigliano is located in the so-called “area del tufo”: You stand on a base made of tufa, from which the houses protrude like natural growth: the buildings are built both on and in the stone - which you notice when you look at the basement and enters the basement of bars and shops in the old towns; these are mostly nothing more than caves carved into the rock.
