Gravel riding
This experimental water slope was commissioned in 1983 to speed up the crossing of the canal's elevation difference. The principle was to have the boat enter a channel filled with water, onto which a mobile machine would position itself, forming a watertight caisson. This assembly was then moved up an inclined ramp, allowing the boat to be raised or lowered in a few minutes (approx. 6 min), much faster than by the nine traditional locks (45 min required). This system is no longer in service today (permanently closed in 2001).
