    Hiking

At this trailhead you can access both the Arizona Trail and the Highline Trail. The two trails split at this point, the AZT going up to the Mogollon Rim, the Highline Trail continuing west.

The East Verde River is a reliable source of water, and camping opportunities are available right along the river. A trail register is located a little further east.

    Hiking

It is remote, outside Payson, AZ but a great hike with some climbing and a fun spot to see where the railroad tunnel was started.

Embark on the Railroad Tunnel via Arizona Trail, a moderate hike that guides you through diverse landscapes. You will cover 3.8 miles (6.2 km) with an elevation gain of 976 feet (298 metres), typically taking about 2 hours and 1 minute to complete. The route begins alongside the East Verde River, offering shaded sections and the chance to spot small waterfalls, before ascending through fragrant ponderosa pine forests.

For your visit, parking is generally available at the Washington Park Trailhead. The trail starts with a relatively flat section, often crossing the East Verde River on well-built wooden bridges. Be prepared for some steeper climbs, particularly in the final quarter-mile leading to the tunnel, where you might encounter loose gravel and fallen logs.

The highlight of this route is the impressive 70-foot incomplete Railroad Tunnel, a fascinating historical relic carved directly into the Mogollon Rim. As you hike, you will enjoy panoramic views of the Mogollon Rim and the surrounding Tonto National Forest. If you visit in early November, you might also catch the vibrant fall colors along the way.
