Ladhar Bheinn

Hiking

5.0

(5)

The hikes up Ladhar Bheinn take you into seriously phenomenal territory in Western Scotland’s incredible Knoydart region. The highest peak in the area, with a summit at 3,350 feet (1,020 m), Ladhar Bheinn is also a remote and challenging hike. With water on three sides, standing on the summit almost feels as though you’re on one of the islands rather than the mainland.

There is nothing not dramatic about the hiking trails up Ladhar Bheinn and you hardly have to wait until the peak for jaw-dropping views. Every step of the way you’ll be greeted by towering, rugged mountains, other-wordly vistas and tumbling burns. This is wild Scotland at its finest.

Hiking Knoydart’s remote wilderness to its magnificent queen

This mountain is a serious undertaking and requires either an early start, or a challenging scramble, depending on the route you choose. A logical start point is Inverie, with its accommodation and food options for the night before. The other popular start is from Barrisdale Bay, extremely isolated in its own right. The trails from here include significant scrambling. Wild camping is an ideal option to really get into the swing of things.

Hiking up Ladhar Bheinn in the warmer months places you in verdant, rugged landscapes that have to be seen to be believed. As you gain height, the scenery drops away, revealing the surrounding, green-blanketed peaks and sparkling lochs. Reaching the summit, the views are nothing short of breathtaking on a clear day. Skye and the Inner Hebrides are captivating while the Knoydart region as a whole is tremendous.

You can stay in Inverie or Mallaig across the water, catching the ferry to Inverie first thing. In summer, take repellent for horseflies and midges and plenty of optimism that your repellent will work. Winter is brutal and the domain of expert winter mountaineers only.

    Hiking

Ladhar Bheinn is the most westerly Munro on the Scottish mainland. But its location in the expansive wilds of the Knoydart peninsular surrounded by sea and lochs on three sides give it an island feel of remoteness. With multiple summits, sculpted ridgelines, and benefited by an overnight approach, it’s a mountain full of drama and adventure.
