Historical interpretation of the church:
According to tradition, there was a chapel on the site of the current church, founded by the Berthouts. This chapel was designated at the end of the 14th century as a dependency of the mother church of Saint Lambertus, under the title of "Capellania de Herlaer Sancte Crucis". When the chaplaincy was officially founded in 1502, the Holy Cross title was replaced by that of Our Lady.
