Nearby, in Spießgasse, stood the synagogue built in 1791 by a foundation from Elias Simon, used until 1854. Its rabbi Samuel Adler worked here since 1842 as a reform rabbi, before he followed a call to New York in 1857 to the Emanu-El Synagogue. The building itself later served as a warehouse until it was demolished in 1976 despite the objection of the Altstadtverein. In 2009, sculptor Florian Geyer created the monument here in Hospitalstraße.
