In the past, the soil in Ravels was infertile. When a farmer found a pier in his field, people were so happy, because piers live in rich soil, that they decided to keep the pier in Ravels. The village blacksmith made a strong chain and with this the pier was attached to the church, but still it disappeared into the ground again and again. The inhabitants of Ravels are called "Ravelse Pieren".
