At the Neffelbach stream, above the Zülpich-Füssenich gauge, the water level rises above 98 cm and flows into the Neffelsee, which serves as a retention basin. This 67-hectare body of water, created as a residual lake from the "Zülpich Mitte" open-cast lignite mine, is now a nature reserve for many rare and endangered species. The overflow of the Neffelbach stream at this point, with its wide channel leading down to the lakeshore, is commonly known as the Neffelsee Cascade due to its shape and the water flowing down during floods.
