The River Crossing in the Forest – Las Tinajas Falls loop offers a genuine rainforest adventure, even though it's not officially part of El Yunque. You'll find yourself surrounded by tropical trees and the sounds of flowing water, navigating muddy paths and slippery rocks. The highlight is Las Tinajas Falls, a natural playground with clear pools, natural water slides, and rope swings, making it a perfect spot for wild swimming and playful exploration.
This easy 1.3-mile (2.1 km) hike, with 160 feet (49 metres) of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 36 minutes, is more challenging than its stats suggest due to numerous river crossings and uneven terrain. You'll start from Estacionamiento Charco Frío y Las Tinajas, and it's best to arrive early on weekdays to avoid crowds. Proper footwear with good grip is essential, as you're guaranteed to get wet and muddy.
This trail is a popular destination in the Fajardo Mountains of Puerto Rico, known for its natural adventure park-like qualities. Beyond the main attractions, climbing further upstream past the rope swing can lead you to more secluded spots and additional natural water slides, offering a quieter experience away from the busiest areas.
