If you're ready for a rewarding hike, the Brokeoff Mountain Trail offers a moderate 6.9 miles (11.1 km) journey, climbing 2406 feet (733 metres) over about 4 hours and 3 minutes. You'll experience a dynamic landscape as you ascend, moving from shaded forests and lush meadows to more rugged, rocky alpine environments. The trail culminates at the summit of Brokeoff Mountain, providing sweeping 360-degree panoramic views. From this vantage point, you can clearly see Lassen Peak and the distant, majestic Mount Shasta, making the effort well worth it.
To start your hike, head to the trailhead conveniently located near the Southwest Entrance Station and the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center. Be prepared for varying conditions, as snow can sometimes linger on parts of the trail until mid-August. Additionally, spring snowmelt can make some creek crossings more challenging, so check conditions before you go. You might also find more solitude on this route compared to the more frequently visited Lassen Peak Trail.
This hike offers a unique perspective on the geological history of Lassen Volcanic National Park. As you traverse the diverse terrain, you'll be walking on the remnants of the ancient Brokeoff Volcano, which was once a much larger stratovolcano. The changing ecosystems along the route provide a fascinating glimpse into the park's past and its ongoing natural processes.
