On May 21, 1905, at the initiative of several famous writers, such as Camille Lemonnier, Albert Mockel, George Garnier…, renowned artists (Auguste Donnay, François Maréchal, Richard Heintz…), journalists and political leaders, the very first Tree Festival was held in Esneux. This event, which would later spread throughout the country, paid tribute to the Tree, for its beauty and the symbolism associated with it, with the aim of raising citizens' awareness of the threat to nature posed by industrial growth.
