Embark on a moderate hike along Trail 221, a 4.9-mile (7.9 km) route that climbs 2535 feet (773 metres) through the Parco delle Orobie Bergamasche. This journey, typically taking around 4 hours and 4 minutes, offers a blend of forest paths and mountain tracks. You will pass the unique Cattedrale Vegetale, an art installation made of trees, before entering the Sentiero dei Fiori. Here, you can enjoy the sight of various endemic flowers, some quite rare, as the path opens up to views of Monte Alben and the surrounding valleys. The experience culminates in panoramic alpine vistas from the Rifugio Capanna 2000.
To begin your adventure, head to the Plassa parking area in Zambla, located conveniently under the old ski lifts. Remember to bring coins for the parking fee, as this is a paid lot. The trailhead is easily accessible from here, making it a straightforward starting point for your hike. Consider an early start to make the most of the views and avoid potential crowds, especially during peak season.
This classic CAI route is more than just a path to a refuge; it is a journey through a rich natural environment. The trail is part of the Sentiero dei Fiori, known for its diverse and sometimes rare endemic flora. Reaching Rifugio Capanna 2000, situated at 1969 meters on the southern slope of Pizzo Arera, rewards you with expansive views across the Orobie Alps. From the refuge, you have options to continue to the summit of Pizzo Arera or explore more of the scenic Sentiero dei Fiori.
