The old cemetery was laid out around 1530 as part of the city's expansion. In 1903 a new cemetery was created on the Rodtberg. Since then, the cemetery on the mountain is called "Alter Friedhof" and is a public park.

The cemetery chapel was built between 1623 and 1625 under the city architect Johann Ebel zum Hirsch and restored by Hugo von Ritgen in 1860. However, the interior of the chapel can only be visited during church services or guided tours.
