The Ponkapoag Pond Loop offers a delightful journey through diverse natural beauty, circling the tranquil 203-acre Ponkapoag Pond. You'll wander through mixed forests, skirt wetland edges, and experience a unique boardwalk section that crosses an Atlantic white cedar bog, a rare natural community teeming with unique flora. Keep an eye out for avian inhabitants like kingfishers and ospreys, adding to the serene atmosphere of this accessible trail.

This easy 4.3-mile (6.9 km) hiking route, with a modest 138 feet (42 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hour and 47 minutes. The trail is well-marked and largely flat, though you'll encounter some minor hills and sections with roots and rocks. Dogs are welcome on a leash, and the trail is suitable for families, making it a great option for a relaxed outdoor adventure.

Historically, the area around Ponkapoag Pond was a summer gathering spot for Native American tribes, valued for its abundant fish and fertile lands. Today, it's designated an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) due to its unique natural resources, including wetlands and vernal pools. Beyond hiking, the pond also offers opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, making it a versatile destination.
