    Hiking

The Down Under Tank is a small cow pond, abundantly surrounded by cow dung. Filtering and/or chemical treatment of the water is thus absolutely necessary, as actually everywhere in the US. If you follow the trail a little further NOBO, you get to a small damWith a little luck, you will even find some water here.

Arizona Trail: Passage 3 - Canelo Hills West

Embark on a challenging hike along Arizona Trail: Passage 3 - Canelo Hills West, a difficult route spanning 17.7 miles (28.5 km). You will gain 935 feet (285 metres) in elevation, requiring an estimated 7 hours and 43 minutes to complete. The trail winds through rolling grasslands and chaparral, leading you into hills lined with oak and manzanita. Expect short, steep ascents and descents, along with dry wash crossings, as you make your way through the Coronado National Forest. You will be treated to panoramic views of the Santa Rita and Patagonia Mountains, offering a rewarding experience for dedicated hikers.

When planning your visit, be aware that water sources are intermittent and scarce along this passage, so it is crucial to carry all the water you will need. The trail can become particularly challenging during summer and early autumn due to significant overgrowth. This is because trail work is not permitted before October 1st in certain areas to protect threatened and endangered species. You will also encounter numerous gates along the route due to livestock grazing; always remember to close them unless they are intentionally wired open.

This passage is known for its unique natural features, including the distinctive 'cinnamon-colored' grass that gives the Canelo Hills their name. As you hike, you can enjoy the pleasant, shady sections found within Red Rock Canyon. The area is rich in diverse plant and animal species, and you might even spot rare birds, especially as you approach the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve. This segment offers a deep dive into the region's unique ecosystem and scenic beauty.
