The Wright Brothers Huffman Prairie Bikeway offers a unique blend of paved and natural surfaces, taking you through a landscape steeped in aviation history. You'll traverse areas adjacent to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Wright State University, with views of the Huffman Reservoir and the Mad River Valley. The trail shifts from a 10-to-12-foot-wide paved bikeway to grassy paths and rough pasture within the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, providing a varied experience underfoot.
This moderate 6.1-mile (9.9 km) hiking route, with a gentle 68 feet (21 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes. While much of the path is easy, some sections, particularly near the Huffman Dam, present gradual climbs that might feel more moderate for hikers. Sun protection is advisable due to minimal shade in certain areas, and comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the unpaved sections.
The primary draw of this trail is its profound historical significance, connecting you to the very grounds where Orville and Wilbur Wright perfected controlled flight. The route provides access to the Huffman Prairie Flying Field, a preserved segment of the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, and the Wright Brothers Memorial. It's also part of the extensive Miami Valley Trail system, and uniquely, horses are permitted on this trail in Greene County.

Easy hike. Great for any fitness level. Easily-accessible paths. Suitable for all skill levels.
