    Hiking

Heart Lake is a small, attractive lake in the Latir Peak Wilderness surrounded by verdant grasses and plants. This is a great destination in and of itself, or along with some of the remote peaks in the area. Most hike it via the Lake Fork Trail from Cabresto Lake, but it can be approached from several different trails.

Embark on the Heart Lake and Latir Peak loop, a challenging hike that takes you through varied terrain in the remote Latir Peak Wilderness. This difficult 13.4-mile (21.5 km) route involves a significant elevation gain of 3482 feet (1061 metres), requiring approximately 8 hours and 53 minutes to complete. You will trek through deep forests before emerging into expansive alpine meadows and rocky scree, eventually reaching the scenic Heart Lake nestled among high peaks.

Planning your visit requires preparation for this demanding high-country adventure. The trail is considered hard due to its length and substantial climbing, so ensure you are fit and ready for a full day out. Be aware that some paths in the alpine meadows can be faint, so you might need to rely on cairns for navigation. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended to access the Cabresto Lake trailhead, as the road conditions can be rough.

This loop offers a true wilderness experience in New Mexico's Southern Rocky Mountains. From the alpine ridges, especially Latir Mesa and Latir Peak, you can enjoy sweeping panoramic views. Look out for distant landmarks like Colorado's Blanca Peak and New Mexico's Wheeler Peak, adding to the sense of accomplishment on this memorable journey.
