    Hiking

Stansbury Island Trail traverses along the southern end of this beautiful peninsula on the Great Salt Lake near Tooele. The northern part of the "island" is private and not accessible to hikers. This trail is generally quite quiet, but it is open to mountain bikers as well as hikers. Be aware that adjacent to the trail is a shooting range so don't be too, too freaked out by sounds of gunshots and wear bright colors. After an initial steep climb, you hike along great single track with great view of the Great Salt Lake and surrounding mountains.

Embark on the Stansbury Island Trail, a moderate hiking route that takes you through varied terrain, from gradual climbs to rocky and sandy sections. You'll cover 8.3 miles (13.3 km) and gain 1871 feet (570 metres) in elevation, with the highlight being the panoramic, 360-degree views of the Great Salt Lake and the surrounding desert from the summit. Expect a dry, sparse environment dotted with sagebrush and juniper trees as you make your way up.

Planning your visit is straightforward, though you should allocate about 4 hours and 58 minutes for the full hike. Spring and fall are the best times to go, offering pleasant conditions for this southern-exposed trail. Remember to wear sturdy hiking boots for the mixed terrain, and consider bright clothing, as target shooting occurs in nearby areas. Always bring plenty of water, as the environment is dry.

This trail offers more than just views; it also traces sections of the ancient shoreline of Lake Bonneville, adding a unique historical layer to your outdoor experience. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as mule deer, as you explore. The island's geology and ecosystem make it a notable feature in the region, providing a distinct desert island adventure.
