We started at 6:30 a.m. in mid-July and despite 36 degrees it wasn't too hot, the path was pleasantly shaded at that time. The ascent begins on a wide path and is very easy to walk, but when it goes downhill again later on you have to be very careful not to slip on the rubble. We had sturdy running shoes on - that was OK, but hiking boots would definitely have been better.
