Embark on a moderate road cycling journey from Flamingo to Long Pine Key, covering 71.8 miles (115.5 km) with a minimal elevation gain of just 67 feet (20 metres). This route takes you through the unique landscapes of Everglades National Park, often called the "River of Grass." You will cycle through vast pine forests and open grasslands, experiencing the flat terrain that defines this region. Expect to spend around 4 hours and 16 minutes immersed in this distinctive environment.

When planning your visit, be aware that while the main park road is paved, a significant portion of this route, the Long Pine Key Nature Trail, is unpaved. This section features dirt, gravel, and limestone surfaces, making it unsuitable for traditional road bikes. Consider using a mountain bike or a hybrid for this part of the trail. Much of the route is exposed to the sun, so prepare for limited shade and bring plenty of water.

This trail offers a unique perspective on Florida's diverse ecosystems. As you cycle, keep an eye out for various wildlife, including birds, reptiles, and even American alligators, especially near Pine Glades Lake. The subtle elevation changes across the landscape create distinct habitats, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Everglades.
