This beloved bike route runs up and down the East Coast for more than 3,000 miles. All told, the greenway runs through an enormous diversity of nature and history, such as where George Washington's grist mill sits near Dogue Creek.

The Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail offers a captivating touring cycling experience, weaving through a mix of natural beauty and historical significance. You'll find yourself riding along packed dirt towpaths, smooth pavement, and even some gravel sections, with highlights like the scenic Occoquan River views. The route provides a journey through diverse ecosystems, from tidewater marshlands to rolling foothills, showcasing a blend of natural and cultural landscapes.

Planning your ride is straightforward, with the best conditions typically found between April and October, when the weather is cooler and the scenery is at its peak. This particular section is a moderate 24.2-mile (39.0 km) ride with 1146 feet (349 metres) of elevation gain, taking approximately 2 hours and 22 minutes. While some parts are easy, the varied terrain means a gravel or touring bike is recommended for the most comfortable experience.

This trail is part of a much larger "braided" network, connecting numerous side trails and alternative routes, including sections of the Great Allegheny Passage and the C&O Canal Towpath. It's a journey through American history, following paths explored by George Washington and linking significant sites like George Washington's Mount Vernon. You'll also have opportunities to spot diverse wildlife and plant life, making it a rich experience beyond just the ride.
