Island Lookout sits at the top of the W. James Whyte Island Reserve, a volcanic mesa rising above the junction of the Werribee River and Myrniong Creek, and is reached by a steep climb from the valley below. The plateau at the top is wide and open, with a 1 km circuit around the rim taking you to several viewpoints, the best of which look directly down into Werribee Gorge. On a clear day, the view southeast through the gorge extends all the way to the distant Melbourne skyline.
