The Reformation of the Church in the 16th century was hindered and ultimately prevented in Achern and its surroundings by the Fürstenberg and Habsburg rulers in association with the Prince-Bishop of Strasbourg. Thus, the large part of the Ortenau came into the 19th century as a closed Roman Catholic region.
The nucleus of a Protestant parish was the "Grand Ducal Baden Healing and Nursing Home Illenau". In 1701, the Ortenau passed from Habsburg ownership to the Margraves of Baden-Baden, and in 1771 to their Protestant cousins of Baden-Durlach.

The Evangelical Christ Church Achern is located in the center of the city. It was built between 1908 and 1909 and has since been the focal point of Protestant community life in the region.
The interior impresses with its generous wood paneling on the galleries. A colorful stained-glass window above the altar depicts Jesus giving the Sermon on the Mount. The church also features artful round windows of the four evangelists.
The building is known for its excellent acoustics.
