    Hiking

The Upper Rock Creek Trail winds through a densely wooded area with lots of shade. This is a muti-use trail so expect to see a few mountain bikers on your hike. Also, it will be muddy after a rain so either wait for things to dry out or wear some good boots if you're visiting after a storm.

As the name suggests, this is just the upper portion of the trail, and it continues 16 miles southward to the D.C. city limit.

Embark on an easy hike along the Upper Rock Creek Trail, a pleasant 4.1-mile (6.5 km) route that offers a gentle escape into nature. You will experience minimal climbing, with only 97 feet (29 metres) of elevation gain, making it accessible for most. Expect to spend about 1 hour and 40 minutes immersed in the serene woodlands, where towering oaks provide ample shade and the sounds of the nearby creek create a peaceful atmosphere. This trail is perfect if you are looking for a relaxed outdoor experience without strenuous effort.

When planning your visit, you will find convenient access points at Rock Creek Regional Park, specifically near the Needwood Road entrance, and also at Agricultural History Farm Park. Both locations offer amenities like restrooms, making your trip more comfortable. Since this is a shared-use path, you can expect to encounter other hikers, as well as bikers and horseback riders, so be mindful of your surroundings. Consider starting your hike earlier in the day to enjoy the tranquility before it gets too busy.

The Upper Rock Creek Trail is a key part of the larger Mid-County Loop Trail System, offering you opportunities to extend your adventure if you wish. As you explore, keep an eye out for local wildlife that calls these woodlands home. The trail provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with the natural beauty of Rock Creek Stream Valley Park, offering a refreshing break from urban life and a chance to observe the local ecosystem.
