In 1296, none other than the renowned Gijsbrecht van Amstel is said to have fled to the strong castle in Doornenburg. A flight that the knight had made after he and his cronies had helped Count Floris of Holland near the castle in Muiden to the other world with daggers and sabre-cutting. Van Amstel had a hand in a case that would later become one of the spectacles in Dutch history.
