This work by the sculptor Vincenzo Vela, which stands near the Airolo train station, commemorates the victims of the first Gotthard railway tunnel construction. Designed by the sculptor in 1882 on his own initiative, it was only inaugurated on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the tunnel in 1932.
